  4. The second program is a new beta version of "KingFisher", which is included
  5. in the "Tools/KingFisher" directory.  This program also uses a database
  6. which is built from the included product info files.

  8. For general browsing of the CD, you can use DirWork (in Tools/DirWork).

  14. This CD-ROM contains lots of utilities that are ready to run directly off
  15. the CD-ROM.  This will be slower than running off a hard drive, but CD-ROM
  16. drives are improving constantly, so if you have one of the newer double,
  17. triple, or quad speed drives, this should not be too painful.  You may be
  18. able to save as much as 300 Mb of disk space by running directly off the
  19. CD-ROM.

  21. For this CD-ROM all of the setup necessary to run most things directly off
  22. the CD-ROM is for you to run a couple of the startup scripts on the CD-ROM;
  23. one to setup the GNU environment and one to setup the "Useful" environment.
  24. The file Useful/Sys/S/User-Startup-Example is an example of one way to do
  25. this that will find the latest available FreshFish CD at boot time, and
  26. run the appropriate startup script(s).

  28. Just copy the User-Startup-Example script to S:FFCD-Startup, and then add
  29. the indicated commands at the beginning of the User-Startup-Example file to
  30. your S:User-Startup file, and reboot.  You have to reboot because it needs
  31. to run before the LoadWB command is run, so that the Workbench will know
  32. about the directories added to the command search path.

  34. If you want a more customized environment, you can look at what the
  35. GNU-Startup and Useful-Startup scripts are doing and use appropriate bits
  36. and pieces in your own S:User-Startup.  Future disks may have a more
  37. sophisticated method of customizing the environment to allow things to run
  38. off the CD-ROM.

  44. This CD-ROM contains ports of various GNU utilities.  See GNU/README
  45. for further information about what is included.

  47. I am very picky about adhering completely to the conditions of the GNU
  48. Public License, so all of the GNU code that goes on one of the CD-ROM's has
  49. to be built and tested the first time it is included and each time it is
  50. updated.  Expect this portion of the CD-ROM to continually grow with each
  51. CD-ROM release, as more ports of GNU code are added.

  55.     Some of the GNU utilities, gcc in particular, require a
  56.     very large stack.  You need to arrange that the CLI/Shell
  57.     or whatever you run these programs from has a large stack
  58.     set.  In a CLI you can set this with a command of the
  59.     form "stack 100000" (100000 is what I use).  You can also
  60.     put this command in your S:Shell-Startup file to get large
  61.     stacks for all CLI/Shell startups, without having to 
  62.     remember to manually set the stack each time.  Really huge
  63.     compiles, like recompiling the compiler itself, may require
  64.     even more stack space (like 300Kb or more).
